Thursday, September 2nd
Southern Miss (47) at South Carolina (-14): This game will be televised on ESPN. It's the fifth time in six years that USC opens with an ESPN Thursday Night game. Last year, they won at NC State, 7-3, as five-point pups. This year, they are significantly favored over a Southern Miss team that is expected to contend for the C-USA East Division title. However, the Golden Eagles have lost ten straight games to BCS opponents and have dropped five straight road openers by an average of 15 PPG. Gamecocks HC Steve Spurrier remains unenamored with QB Stephen Garcia, whom he refuses to officially name the starter. Key trend: South Carolina is 16-5 Under in the first two weeks of the season since 1992.
Marshall (47.5) at Ohio State (-28.5): Be wary of the favored Buckeyes here. They have a lookahead to Miami (FL) next week. Remember last season when they barely beat Navy with USC on deck. However, Marshall will not present any of the matchup difficulties the Midshipmen did. OSU has won 31 straight home openers and by an average of 20 PPG. MU has lost 10 straight road openers and by an average of 23 PPG. They are 0-5 all-time vs. the Big Ten with the average loss coming by 24 PPG. Key trend: Ohio State is on an 8-1 run Under the total vs. non-conference opponents.
Pitt (48.5) at Utah (-3): This is the best of the seven Thursday matchups on paper and should be the most competitive. It's a rematch of the 2004 Fiesta Bowl where the Utes became the first non-BCS school to win a BCS bowl game, crushing the Panthers 35-7. Utah has won 17 straight home games and beaten a BCS school (Arizona, Texas A&M and Indiana) in each of its previous three home openers. Pitt is breaking in a new starting QB. The early money has come in on Utah.
USC (-21) at Hawaii (54): This is the much ballyhooed debut of Lane Kiffin at USC. It will be interesting to see how motivated the Trojans are in games like this considering they are bowl ineligible. Hawaii was the only home team on the Thursday card that opened as a dog. They have allowed at least 60 points in each of the last three meetings vs. Southern Cal, but the previous meeting was in 2005. USC is on a 28-1 SU vs. WAC teams. The early money has come in on the Trojans.
Minnesota (-3) at Middle Tennessee State (48.5): The key here is the suspension of MTSU QB Dwight Dasher. That led to a gigantic line move in favor of the visitor, who opened as a 4.5-point dog. Key trend: MTSU is 6-0 ATS last six games as a favorite.
Saturday, September 4th
Oregon State (50.5) vs. TCU (-13.5) (at Arlington, TX): Am I the only one who thinks this line is too high? Granted, the Horned Frogs do return nine starters, including QB Dalton, from an offense that averaged 38.3 PPG while Mike Riley's Beavers break in a new starting QB in Ryan Katz. OSU has also lost five straight road openers and although this is technically a "neutral site" affair, there's no doubt which team will have the crowd support. Key trend: Oregon State is 6-22 ATS in September road games.
North Carolina (39.5) vs. LSU (-1): The Tar Heels are facing multiple suspensions due to academic infractions. This is the third straight year that the Georgia Dome will host an ACC vs. SEC battle on the first Saturday of the year. The SEC (Alabama) has won and covered both prior meetings with the Tide dominating both Clemson and Virginia Tech. No team in the country has more NFL-ready talent on the defensive side of the ball than North Carolina. LSU has won 13 straight September games.
